So my new bed frame arrived yesterday. dark brown/black, platform. queen sized.
I have been sleeping on an unusual thin and custom double bed sized width futon that is queen-sized length. On the floor. I loved all the open space in my apartment, but I thought I could avoid being woken by the downstairs neighbors' bathroom fan if I elevated myself 14 inches.
But,
It turns out that the frame is taking up more space than appeals to me. While I don't need the space or use it, I was luxuriating in the open space. Plus, now much of that open space is just going to be a sub-bed dust collector. Also my apartment is poorly designed for furniture. The bedroom windows begin about 6" off the floor so many people are forced to put dressers in front of the windows... only now my bed is next to and level with the window which is nice. The bedroom entrance is a double sliding door that makes it hard to find a place where the furniture does not seem to be sticking out of the room.

I can only return the frame for store credit and if I keep this frame then I need a thicker futon/mattress to be comfortable on the slatted frame. ... brainstorming some options....

1-return the frame and with store credit get an identical second cushier futon made for me and pile it on my current thin one for more softness. keep sleeping on the floor.
2-get used to it! buy a used or new queen sized futon to fit the frame and keep the frame and store things under the bed to make it worthwhile.
3-exchange the frame for an identical light colored one, maybe this dark color is just too heavy looking? then I can do option #2
4-ask the store if they have any returned or broken beds that have intact double or twin header and footer to go with my queen side rails so that I can have a narrower bed and reclaim some of the empty space in the room.

Tonight I literally get to "sleep on it."

red mill multigrain pancakes made with two eggs, not one

then I sprinkled the dish with "rice seasoning" from the asian grocery store: sesame seed, salt, sugar, seaweed.

breakfast [Nov. 7th, 2007|09:00 am]
peanut butter - honey - miso - garam masala and maple syurp sauce over fried tofu and apples over brown rice.

I think this is the craziest breakfast ever!

the sauce (sans garam masal and maple syrup) was made the other day for
buckwheat-wheat noodles mixed with sauteed onion, ginger, tofu and steamed collard greens.

wow I got my first LJ hate mail today. someone found an entry form 4/12/07 that was public where i described my nightmares shortly after getting my nipple piercings.  the person said they had been reading my (public) journal and insulted me. i own the journal so i deleted their query. it has been a bad enough morning today... ! i tried to go to yoga in brookline village but ended up finding another woman also looking for the class and we did not find it. I am in pain from cleaning the freezer at my job yesterday so one hour of driving to  yoga without actually doing yoga was frustrating, but not as bad as it could have been.

Peru today [Aug. 17th, 2007|02:24 pm]

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/17/world/americas/17cnd-peru.html?hp

I can feel the pacific coast air, the chill outdoors, the mid-day warmth, the atmosphere that makes the sun glow and the buildings glow in the sun. I can smell the dust from the buildings and the roads. I feel for the Peruvian women as they cry.  they were my favorite women in any south american country, upbeat, sarcastic, sensible and warm.

blog against racism [Aug. 10th, 2007|07:08 pm]
So, technically, according to a common definition of racism, as a white person I can not experience racism. However, I believe that in Argentina I was treated in a negatively biased manner due to my foreignness, from strangers and coworkers both. In this racially non-diverse country I encountered a culture clash, for sure, as well as a complete cesspool for sexism and both were difficulties for me. Additionally, maybe at the minimum tangentially, there was a racism of sorts because I was surrounded by people who had an attitude that they were better than I and from whom I looked different externally. The assumptions made about me daily were debilitating to my self esteem (true, nothing worse). Once someone asked me "can you really be that tall?" because they were unfamiliar with tall women. Often Argentines would get aggravated and impatient with me when I could did not understand a specific word and disinclude me in conversation. For example, on one occasion I did not know the name of a college and what course of study was offered, but when I asked for clarification a coworker got annoyed and cut me out a conversation. Several times people wanted to make friends with me solely so they could prove their english skills or practice their english. Various times people at businesses I visited would team up in a flurry, un-requested by me, just to find someone to speak english to me with the assumption that I needed to hear english. In these cases I felt certain I was being treated based on what people saw and assumed of me, never based on their experience of my personality, life experience, educational level, open mind, (never mind personal interests that are kind of culturally not relevant since latin culture does not value individuality as highly as american-european culture). True these are minor examples, non-violent, non-economically hurtful, but they illustrate common hurdles that foreign immigrants and people of color struggle to overcome every day in the USA, piegon-holed, stereotyped, disbelieved, ignored in conversations about higher education, ignored for their inability to speak fluently in the mainstream language.

breakfasts [Aug. 1st, 2007|09:31 am]

It has been a while since I made any innovative exciting food. Collard greens, kale and tempeh with brown rice were much less appealing lately.

Last week I made a couple of exciting things though.

Pork Quesadilla
I roasted a pork loin on the grill with veggies (red pepper and zucchini marinated in olive oil, pepper and garlic for two days). Crap, I forgot the cheese I used but it was expensive and from whole foods. I put cheese on wheat tortillas, piled on mostly cooked pork and grilled the tortillas cooking the meat some more, then I piled on veggies, put on a second tortilla and flipped and cooked some more. It was really yummy and the extra grilled veggies went well with brown rice and whole wheat maccaroni and cheese.

Sunflower seed - walnut breakfast parfait
I soaked sunflower seeds and walnuts (greater volume of the former) and some raisins in water for a day. I put them in the food processor but they were too wet, so I transferred them to a blender and blending made a thick dip-like consistency.  It's sweet-ish and protein rich and has a slightly granular texture. It is filling. But I wondered how to enjoy eating it?
I have been enjoying about 1/3 cup with a cup or less of plain yogurt, around 15 blackberries and drizzled with honey. This is a great filling breakfast!

brain development [Jul. 11th, 2007|09:07 am]
"“patterning genes,” which direct embryonic development and which in this case dictate brain formation. Work in lab animals has shown that at least one patterning gene choreographs the developmental balance between the brain’s dorsal areas (along the back and the top of the brain) and ventral areas (at the front and bottom). The dorsal areas play a strong role in vision and space and help us recognize other peoples’ intentions; ventral areas figure heavily in language, processing sounds, facial recognition, emotion, music enjoyment and social drive. In an embryo’s first weeks, Galaburda says, patterning genes normally moderate “a sort of turf war going on between these two areas,” with each trying to expand. The results help determine our relative strengths in these areas. We see them in our S.A.T. scores, for example: few of us score the same in math (which draws mostly on dorsal areas) as in language (ventral), and the discrepancy varies widely. The turf war is rarely a draw."

best friends? [Jul. 8th, 2007|03:21 pm]

I have never had a best friend. If you did or did not know me, why might this be an issue for concern?

breathe! [Jun. 22nd, 2007|03:22 pm]
new thoughts on using the body in a healthy manner mentally and physically:

1. important breathing nerves:
the nerves that innervate your arms and hands branch from the nerves from the cervical spine. nerve pairs from several vertebrae re-meet eachother shortly outside the spine and then they re-branch and become the various arm nerves and very importantly of note: one branch innervates the diaphragm. breathing must be an important part of using our arms... remember to breathe diaphragmatically while typing!

2. important breathing and body temperature physiology:
your brain is using a huge amount of your body's oxygen supply.
your skeletal muscle contractions help maintain
your body temperature. your diaphragm is a large muscle that contracts and relaxes for breathing.

OK, so, if I am stuck in a particular thought, often I am also breathing very shallowly. if I am typing, I likely will start to have RSI symptonms of pain and stiffness in my arms. at the same time my brain is working fast and the rest of my body is sacrificing its oxygen and blood supply to my thoughts. breathing diaphragmatically and breathing more will probably help me spread oxygen and blood throughout my body, nourishing my brain and extremeties together. breathing more fully will probably also warm my body so I will feel more comfortable and will not get into a combined path of physical stillness and pain/bad mood spiral.

OK, so, maybe you do not have the same issues as I do, but we all could use more breathing. It seems to me that even when someone is sitting still, that person can still move the blood around, move some big muscles, change their thoughts.
